A Day Trip to Longwood Gardens

I recently went for a Saturday day trip to Longwood Gardens, located in Kennett Square Pennsylvania. I’m still enjoying spending time outside, rediscovering the outdoors was a highlight for me last year. I’ve seen pictures of the grounds at Longwood Gardens online, viewing them in person did not disappoint! The gardens are over 1,077 acres, and includes both indoor and outdoor spaces, overflowing with a plethora of local and exotic plants. There was so much to see for one day and I need to go back to explore further.

When planning out the day trip, I gravitated towards the fountain gardens, which includes The Italian Water Garden and The Main Fountains. I felt like I was transported to Europe. Both of these fountain areas were majestic and a must see if you visit.

The Italian Water Garden was high up on my priority list of things to see (pictured above). The grassy area with the symmetric fountains drew me in. Viewed from a terrance, looking down, you get a great view of the entire space. There are paths on both sides to view the fountains as well. Unlike the main fountain area, you can’t walk around the fountain area of The Italian Water Garden. None the less, it was beautiful and I enjoyed watching the fountain show. Out of all the gardens I was able to see this trip, The Italian Water Garden was my favorite.

One of the highlights, of not just the Conservatory but the entire gardens, are the bathrooms! Located in the east wing, this space was designed to resemble and make you feel like you’re in a jungle. The wall contains live ferns, ivy, moss and other plants. Each of the bathrooms are private spaces, perfect if you’re changing into multiple looks for photos (like me), and all have skylights. The combination of the skylights inside the bathrooms, the green wall, and the doors made me feel like I was out of this world on a futuristic planet.

Overall, I highly enjoyed visiting Longwood Gardens. The history of the gardens, combined with the architecture and of course the well looked after grounds, made the experience very memorable. I’m looking forward to my next visit.

What are your favorite city escapes / day trips? I would love to hear recommendations from you!
